Email Send / Open Tracking Feature (beta)

Modified on Thu, 24 Jul at 11:45 AM

Benji Pays provides detailed visibility into the status of your emailed receipts and payment requests.

Where to See Tracking

Go to Reports > Email Send History or open Email Logs directly from a Customer page.

Click the watch icon on the right-hand side under Actions to “View Events”.

In the Email Event History pop-up window, you’ll be able to view:

  • Sent status
  • Delivery confirmation
  • Open events
  • Click tracking
  • (Coming soon) Bounce tracking

Another option is to find the invoice you want to explore and click the eye icon on the right under Actions. You will find more information under the Details section.

Understanding the Delivered, Opened, and Clicked Statuses

1. Delivered Status

What it means:
The email was successfully handed off to the recipient's mail server (as identified by their domain's MX record).

Important Notes:

  • Delivered ≠ Inboxed: We cannot confirm if it reached the recipient’s inbox—only that their server accepted it.
  • Multiple Recipients on Same Domain: If you're BCCing others at the same company, delivery to their server will show all those recipients as "Delivered" simultaneously.
  • No Event ≠ Not Delivered: If you don’t see a "Delivered" event, it may simply mean the recipient's server hasn’t returned a delivery confirmation. This doesn’t mean the email failed.

2. Opened Status

What it means:
The email was opened by someone, we can not identify who opened the email..

Possible Scenarios:

  • It may have been opened by the intended recipient.
  • It could have been opened by a colleague (e.g. if the email was BCC’d or forwarded).
  • Some email security tools (especially on corporate servers) may auto-scan the message and trigger an "open".

Additional Details:

  • IP Address: An IP may be shown, but this could reflect the recipient’s device or the mail service (e.g. Gmail using Google IPs).
  • One Open per Session: AWS may only log one open per device within a short timeframe, even if the user opens it multiple times.

3. Clicked Status

What it means:
A link within the email was clicked.

What’s Tracked:

  • All links in the email are tracked, including “Pay Now” or “Card Request” buttons.

⚠️ Final Notes

  • This tracking provides helpful insights, but due to the nature of how email works across the internet, it's impossible to know exactly who opened an email or guarantee consistent delivery event reporting across all servers.
  • These limitations are inherent to email infrastructure, not specific to Benji Pays.
  • Email Tracking Is Not Supported with Custom SMTP:
If the merchant is using their own SMTP server under Email Service Settings, tracking (send, open, click) will not function.
We currently have no timeline to support email tracking for custom SMTP configurations.
